Describe a museum you have visited that impressed you.
You should say:
- where it is
- what it contains
- what you did there
and explain why it impressed you.
Namuna javob
A museum that made a lasting impression on me is the State Museum of the History of Uzbekistan in Tashkent, which I revisited last year after many years. As a schoolchild, I remembered it as dusty and rather dull, so I went back somewhat reluctantly with a friend visiting from abroad. The museum covers the region’s history from prehistoric times to the present, with archaeological finds, Buddhist sculptures from Termez, Silk Road ceramics, manuscripts and textiles. What struck me this time was how much I had missed as a child. We spent nearly four hours there. The highlight for me was a Buddhist sculpture from the first or second century — a serene, beautifully carved figure — which challenged the assumption, common even among Uzbeks, that our history began with Islam. My friend was astonished that Buddhism had flourished here at all. I was impressed for several reasons. Firstly, by the sheer depth of history the collection reveals; it shows Central Asia as a crossroads where Greek, Persian, Indian and Chinese influences met. Secondly, seeing it through a foreigner’s eyes made me appreciate what I had taken for granted. And thirdly, I noticed that the museum had been partly modernised — better lighting, clearer labels in English — which made it far more accessible. If anything, it made me reflect on how the way history is presented shapes what we value. A well-curated museum doesn’t just display the past; it invites you to rethink your own identity.

-
Should artefacts taken during colonial times be returned to their countries of origin?
Namuna javob
In many cases, I believe they should, particularly where objects were taken by force and have deep cultural significance. However, each case is different, and long-term loans or joint exhibitions can sometimes be constructive compromises.
Pozitsiya + murosa.
-
Should museums be free to enter?
Namuna javob
Ideally, at least for children, students and residents, since heritage belongs to everyone. Free entry has been shown to increase visitor diversity substantially.
Dalil.
-
Will virtual museums replace physical ones?
Namuna javob
They’re a valuable complement, making collections accessible worldwide. But they can’t replace the physical encounter with an object — its scale, texture and presence.
Komplement.
-
How can museums attract young people?
Namuna javob
Through storytelling, interactivity, late-night events and engaging with contemporary issues, showing that history is relevant rather than remote.
