The line graph illustrates how the populations of Lagos, Tokyo and Paris changed between 1950 and 2020, and how they are expected to change by 2050.
Overall, Tokyo was the largest of the three cities for most of the period, but Lagos is expected to overtake it by the middle of the century. Paris, meanwhile, has grown only slowly.
In 1950, Tokyo already had 11 million inhabitants, almost twice as many as Paris, while Lagos was a small city of just 300,000. Tokyo grew rapidly until 1970 and peaked at around 30 million in 2010. It is projected to decline to 26 million by 2050.
Lagos, by contrast, has grown at an extraordinary rate, reaching 11 million in 2010, and it is predicted to have 28 million people by 2050. The population of Paris rose steadily from 6 million to 10.5 million over the same period, and it is expected to reach only 12 million by 2050.
