The table compares the underground railway systems of London, Paris, Tokyo, Tashkent and Dubai in terms of their age, length and annual number of passengers.
Overall, the older systems tend to be much larger, and Tokyo’s network carries by far the most passengers, even though it is not the longest. The two newest systems are both the shortest and the least used.
London has the oldest underground, which opened in 1863, and it is also the most extensive, with 402 kilometres of route. Paris followed in 1900 with a 226-kilometre network, while Tokyo’s system, opened in 1927, is 304 kilometres long.
In terms of passengers, Tokyo is far ahead, serving 3,600 million people a year, more than twice as many as Paris (1,520 million) or London (1,350 million). The two newest systems are much smaller: Tashkent, opened in 1977, has 70 kilometres of route and 210 million passengers, whereas Dubai’s 90-kilometre metro, the most recent, carries 250 million.
