From customer service chatbots to software that diagnoses diseases, artificial intelligence is rapidly taking over tasks once performed by people. Although this trend raises legitimate fears about unemployment, I believe it is, on balance, a positive development, provided that societies manage the transition wisely.
The main advantage of AI is its ability to increase productivity. Machines can analyse vast amounts of data in seconds, work without breaks and make fewer errors in repetitive tasks. In medicine, for example, AI systems can detect early signs of cancer in scans that a tired doctor might miss. Automation can also remove people from dangerous or unpleasant jobs, such as mining or handling toxic chemicals. As a result, human workers are free to focus on creative, social and strategic work that machines cannot do well, and economies as a whole become more productive.
Nevertheless, the negative effects cannot be ignored. Many routine jobs, from cashiers to translators, are already disappearing, and workers who lose them may struggle to retrain, particularly if they are older or less educated. If the profits from automation go mainly to large technology companies, inequality could increase sharply. There are also concerns about relying on systems whose decisions are difficult to explain or challenge.
However, history suggests that technology creates new jobs as it destroys old ones. The key is to invest heavily in education and retraining, so that workers can move into the new roles that AI generates, and to ensure that the benefits are shared fairly through taxation and social support.
In conclusion, while AI threatens certain jobs and could widen inequality, its potential to improve productivity, safety and healthcare makes it a largely positive development, as long as governments prepare workers for the changes ahead.
