Whether in an airport in Tokyo, a scientific conference in Brazil or an online game, English is often the language people use to communicate. Although the dominance of a single language raises some concerns, I believe its advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages.
The greatest benefit of a shared global language is easier communication. Scientists can publish their research for an international audience and build on each other’s work, which accelerates progress in areas such as medicine and technology. In business, a common language reduces costs and misunderstandings, allowing companies from different countries to cooperate. For individuals, English opens doors to education abroad, international careers and a vast amount of online information. A student in a small town in Uzbekistan, for example, can follow lectures from leading universities for free.
However, there are genuine disadvantages. Native English speakers enjoy an unfair advantage in international competition, while others must invest years of study to reach the same level. More seriously, the dominance of English may contribute to the decline of smaller languages, which carry unique literature, traditions and ways of seeing the world. When young people see English as the key to success, they may neglect their mother tongue.
These risks are real, but they are not an inevitable result of a global language. Many people successfully maintain their first language while using English professionally, and governments can protect national languages through education and cultural policy.
In conclusion, although a global language can threaten linguistic diversity and create inequality, its benefits for science, business and personal opportunity are greater, provided that local languages are actively protected.
