Rising rates of obesity and diabetes have led many governments to consider taxing unhealthy food and drinks. I partly agree with this approach, but I believe a tax alone is not enough to change people’s eating habits.
There are good reasons to support such a tax. Higher prices are known to reduce consumption; for example, after the United Kingdom introduced a levy on sugary drinks, many manufacturers reduced the sugar content of their products. The money raised could also be invested in healthcare or used to make fruit and vegetables cheaper. In this way, the tax would both discourage harmful choices and support healthy ones. Over time, such measures could reduce the enormous costs that diet-related illnesses impose on public health systems.
However, critics argue that such taxes are unfair to low-income families, who spend a larger share of their income on food and often rely on cheap, processed meals. There is also a question of personal freedom: many people feel that adults should be able to decide what they eat without government interference. Moreover, people may simply buy cheaper unhealthy alternatives or travel to areas where the tax does not apply.
For these reasons, I believe a tax should be part of a wider strategy. Governments should also invest in nutrition education in schools, require clear labelling on food packaging and make healthy options more affordable.
In conclusion, taxing unhealthy food can be a useful tool, but it will only improve public health if it is combined with education and measures that make healthy eating accessible to everyone.
