The traditional five-day working week was established over a century ago, and some organisations are now experimenting with a shorter alternative. In my view, the advantages of a four-day week generally outweigh the disadvantages, although it is not suitable for every industry.
The most significant benefit is improved wellbeing. With an extra day off, employees have more time to rest, exercise and spend with their families, which reduces stress and burnout. Surprisingly, many companies that have tried the system report that productivity remains the same or even increases, because rested workers concentrate better and waste less time in unnecessary meetings. A large trial in the United Kingdom in 2022 found that most participating companies chose to continue with the four-day week afterwards. It can also help firms attract and keep talented staff in a competitive job market.
On the other hand, a shorter week creates challenges for certain sectors. Hospitals, schools, shops and emergency services must operate every day, so they would need to employ more staff, which increases costs. In some jobs, workers may also feel pressure to complete five days of work in four, leading to longer and more exhausting working days. Small businesses, in particular, may struggle to cover the extra expense.
These problems suggest that the four-day week cannot be imposed on all employers at once. However, it could be introduced gradually and flexibly, for example by allowing staff to rotate their days off so that services remain available throughout the week.
In conclusion, although a four-day week may increase costs in some sectors, its benefits for wellbeing, productivity and staff retention are substantial. On balance, I believe it is a positive change that more organisations should consider.
