Obesity has become one of the most serious public health challenges of the twenty-first century, increasing the risk of diabetes, heart disease and other illnesses. This essay will examine the main causes of this problem and suggest measures that governments and individuals could take to address it.
The first major cause is a change in diet. Processed foods and sugary drinks, which are high in calories but low in nutrients, have become cheap, convenient and heavily advertised. Busy working families often rely on fast food or ready meals instead of cooking at home. The second cause is a sedentary lifestyle. Many people now work at desks, travel by car and spend their free time in front of screens, so they burn far fewer calories than previous generations. Children, in particular, play outside much less than they once did. Urban design also contributes, since many cities lack safe spaces for walking and cycling.
Tackling obesity requires action at several levels. Governments could introduce taxes on sugary drinks and use the revenue to make fresh fruit and vegetables more affordable. Clear food labelling would help consumers make healthier choices, and restrictions on advertising unhealthy food to children would reduce their influence. Schools have an important role to play by providing nutritious meals, teaching cooking skills and ensuring that pupils take part in daily physical activity. Finally, cities should invest in parks, cycle lanes and pedestrian areas that make an active lifestyle easier and safer.
In my view, individual willpower alone is not enough; the environment in which people live must make healthy choices the easy choices.
In conclusion, obesity is caused mainly by unhealthy diets and inactive lifestyles. A combination of government regulation, education and better urban planning offers the most effective way to reverse this trend.
