Since the pandemic, working from home has shifted from a rare privilege to a normal arrangement for millions of employees. Although this trend has certain drawbacks, I believe that its advantages clearly outweigh them.
The most obvious benefit is the time and money saved on commuting. In large cities, workers can spend two hours a day travelling, so removing this journey gives them more time for rest, exercise and family life. Furthermore, remote work offers flexibility: parents can organise their schedules around their children, and people living in rural areas can access jobs that were previously only available in major cities. Employers also benefit, as they can reduce the cost of renting expensive office space. Fewer cars on the roads during rush hour also means less pollution, which benefits society as a whole.
Admittedly, working from home is not ideal for everyone. Some employees feel isolated without daily contact with colleagues, and it can be difficult to separate work from private life when the office is also the living room. In addition, younger staff may miss out on the informal learning that happens when they observe more experienced colleagues. Communication within teams can also become slower when every question requires an email or a video call.
However, most of these problems can be solved with sensible policies. Hybrid models, in which employees spend two or three days a week in the office, allow companies to keep the social benefits of teamwork while preserving the freedom of remote work.
In conclusion, although remote work can lead to isolation and blurred boundaries, the gains in time, flexibility and cost are far more significant, particularly when combined with regular office days.
