Proposal: Towards a Greener Campus
Introduction
This proposal outlines the main environmental problems on our campus and suggests realistic ways of addressing them with the active participation of students.
Main problems
The most visible problem is waste. Large quantities of single-use plastic cups and food containers are thrown away in the canteen every day, and recycling bins are rare and poorly labelled. Energy is also wasted, as lights and air conditioning are frequently left on in empty classrooms. Finally, the campus has very little green space, and most of the outdoor areas are covered in concrete.
Recommendations
It is recommended that the canteen replace disposable items with reusable cups and plates, offering a small discount to students who bring their own containers. Clearly labelled recycling stations should be installed in every building. In addition, motion sensors could be fitted to lights in classrooms and corridors, which would reduce electricity consumption considerably. Unused areas of concrete could also be turned into small gardens, which would provide shade and attractive places for students to relax.
Involving students
A student-led “Green Team” could organise awareness campaigns and monitor progress, while competitions between faculties to reduce waste would make the initiative engaging. Volunteers could also help to plant and maintain the new gardens, giving students a sense of ownership over the project.
Conclusion
By combining practical changes with student involvement, the university could significantly reduce its environmental impact while setting an example for the wider community.
