Public budgets are limited, and governments must decide how to divide money between competing priorities. Some argue that scientific research should take precedence over the arts, while others believe both deserve support. In my view, science should receive the larger share, but cutting arts funding entirely would be a serious mistake.
Supporters of prioritising science point to its practical benefits. Scientific research leads to new medicines, cleaner energy and technologies that create jobs and drive economic growth. The rapid development of vaccines during recent global health crises, for instance, would have been impossible without decades of public investment in research. Faced with challenges such as climate change and disease, many people feel that society cannot afford to spend money on activities that do not directly solve these problems.
On the other hand, those who defend arts funding argue that culture is essential to a good society. Music, literature, theatre and painting express a nation’s identity, preserve its history and help people understand each other. The arts also contribute to wellbeing and mental health, and creative industries, from film to design, employ millions of people and attract tourists. Without public support, many art forms that are not commercially profitable, such as classical music or traditional crafts, would struggle to survive.
I believe that science deserves priority because of its direct impact on health and survival. However, the arts make life meaningful, and the relatively small amounts they require offer considerable cultural and economic returns. A wise government should therefore support both.
In conclusion, while scientific research should receive the greater share of public funding, the arts play an important role in identity, wellbeing and the economy, so they should not be neglected.
