Social media, online games and discussion forums have made it possible to form friendships with people we may never meet in person. While some consider these relationships just as genuine as traditional friendships, others believe they lack real depth. In my view, online friendships can be meaningful, but they rarely replace face-to-face relationships completely.
Those who value online friendships point out that the internet allows people to connect with others who share their interests, regardless of geography. A teenager who feels isolated at school may find understanding and support in an online community of people with similar hobbies or experiences. For people with disabilities, social anxiety or limited mobility, online friendships can be a vital source of connection. Moreover, many lasting relationships, and even marriages, now begin online, which suggests that these friendships can be deep and long-lasting.
On the other hand, critics argue that online friendships are often superficial. It is easy to present an idealised version of oneself on the internet, so people may never truly know each other. Face-to-face friendships involve shared experiences, physical presence and practical help, such as visiting someone in hospital or helping them move house, which online friends cannot easily provide. There is also a risk of deception, since people are not always who they claim to be.
I believe the value of a friendship depends on trust, honesty and mutual support rather than on where it began. Online friendships can certainly have these qualities, but they become strongest when friends eventually meet in person.
In conclusion, online friendships can be valuable and supportive, particularly for isolated people, but face-to-face contact still adds a depth that is difficult to achieve through a screen.
