In a world shaped by rapid technological change, some people question the value of studying events that happened centuries ago. While I understand this view, I believe that history remains one of the most important subjects students can study.
Those who consider history a waste of time argue that schools should prepare students for the future rather than the past. In their view, subjects such as computer science, mathematics and economics offer far more practical benefits, as they lead directly to well-paid jobs in growing industries. They also point out that memorising dates and the names of kings has little relevance to modern life, and that time spent on history could be used to teach skills that employers actually need.
On the other hand, supporters of history argue that understanding the past is essential for understanding the present. Many current conflicts, political systems and social problems have deep historical roots, and citizens who know this background are better able to make informed decisions. History also helps societies avoid repeating past mistakes, such as the economic policies that led to the Great Depression or the propaganda that fuelled wars. Furthermore, studying history develops valuable skills: students learn to analyse evidence, compare different interpretations and build logical arguments. Finally, history gives people a sense of identity by connecting them with their culture and heritage.
In my view, the problem lies not with history itself but with the way it is sometimes taught. When it focuses on critical thinking rather than memorisation, history is extremely useful.
In conclusion, although practical subjects are important for future careers, history provides understanding, critical thinking and identity, so it should remain an essential part of education.
